About the Building Blocks for the Rule of Law Project
The Building Bocks for the Rule of Law project is an initiative of Leiden University and Groningen University of the Netherlands, and Universitas Indonesia. It was launched in January 2009 and is scheduled to conclude in September 2012. The entire project has been made possible by the generous funding of the Indonesia Facility, implemented by the NL Agency, on behalf of the Dutch Ministry of European Affairs and International Cooperation.
The aim of the Building Blocks for the Rule of Law project is to contribute to the improvement and quality of the Indonesian legal and socio-legal education system by strengthening the teaching and research capacity of Indonesian law faculties. The project’s stated long-term goals are to strengthen the rule of law in Indonesia; to help Indonesia establish good governance; and to promote economic development and social justice.
At the outset of the project a detailed training plan was drawn up covering the fields of Labour Law, Criminal Law, Civil Law and Socio-Legal Studies. Thereafter, between January 2010 and July 2011, thirteen courses were conducted in these fields at various locations in Indonesia. These courses were taught by both renowned lecturers from Leiden and Groningen Universities as well as respected Indonesian lecturers. The courses were attended by eighty law faculty teaching staff from universities throughout the whole of Indonesia.
As a direct result of the project a new Indonesian text book series entitled ‘Building Blocks for the Rule of Law’ has been created. This series is intended to be used as a teaching tool at Indonesian law faculties. The series combines important contributions from Dutch and Indonesian course lecturers as well valuable input from participants.
The culmination of the Building Blocks for the Rule of Law project is this international conference, hosted by Universitas Indonesia in Depok.
